Multiplatform Work Process

Mercury Development was contracted in 2011 to work on a nontrivial issue with macOS drivers that no other vendor could fix. As Mercury successfully solved the problem, the Fitbit team witnessed the company’s ample expertise and skills and made the decision to extend this partnership to other projects. Since then, Mercury Development has the opportunity to participate in a great number of Fitbit products including firmware development, contributing to the website design and localization, the native Android app and the adaptive Windows client, numerous hardware integrations, and solving nontrivial issues.

Activity Tracking Apps
& Social Network for Mobile and Web

One of the projects Mercury Development worked on, was building an extremely popular application to accompany a vast range of Fitbit wearable activity trackers. Aiming to facilitate users’ health and fitness journeys, the app offers a variety of amazing features that helps users to:

Track steps, distance, calories
burned, floors climbed, active minutes
and recording the heart rate.

Work out from home,
access cardio, strength, yoga
sessions and more.

Improve night
routine with innovative
sleep tools.

Manage stress via listening
to audio tracks and
improve mood.

Keep nutrition in check with
easy-to-use tools to set
goals, log food, and water.

Connect with friends and join
the community to find the support
and encouragement to get inspired.

Rigorous QA

Not only development efforts matter in the product release. Effective quality assurance is also one of the key points. Being a team of highly experienced professionals, Mercury Development also conducted testing for the existing Fitbit iOS application to ensure its usability and overall quality.

Effective Partnership

During almost 10 years of working closely with Fitbit.

Challenges — Ahead of Its Time

Being a multiplatform solution with a big number of products, Fitbit could not avoid development challenges. Fitbit always strived to deliver the best experience possible to its users and offered support of the latest mobile devices, the latest OS versions, and the cutting-edge technology coming with them. This meticulous approach usually presented certain challenges to the engineering team.

Windows 10

When Windows 8.0 was launched, it did not have the Bluetooth capabilities essential for the Fitbit client. To ensure the correct app functioning with this OS, Mercury Development experts had to think out of the box and to come up with an extraordinary solution: in cooperation with Fitbit and partners, Mercury specialists integrated with SDKs that were not yet publicly available. Due to this effort, by the time of the OS version release, the Fitbit client app with full Bluetooth support was ready and waiting for its first users.

Android Phone

Delivering Fitbit features to the Android-phone owners was not a piece of cake either. Early Android mobile phones also lacked Bluetooth support necessary for the client. To bridge this gap, Mercury Development sought and reversed engineered a variety of SDKs. The solution Mercury experts ended up with was to utilize a combination of no less than 5 SDKs to make the Android client work.

Xbox One

Xbox One The Fitbit Coach is a personalized training app with expert-designed video workouts that continually adjust to your feedback, goals, and capabilities — just like a personal trainer! Mercury team helped to bring this experience to your TV with the Xbox One app, that was designed and built from scratch in a matter of months.

HTC Collaboration

Fitbit Android app counted steps before it became mainstream. How this was achieved? Not easily, you bet. While at the time the majority of Android phones did not officially support step counting, the HTC mobile devices had a custom technology to provide this capability. Being courageous enough, Fitbit and Mercury Development worked closely with the phone manufacturer to support step counting in the app for the HTC phones even before it was officially maintained by Google.

Fitbit Joins Google

“We have built a trusted brand that supports more than 28 million active users around the globe who rely on our products to live a healthier, more active life. Google is an ideal partner to advance our mission. With Google’s resources and global platform, Fitbit will be able to accelerate innovation in the wearables category, scale faster, and make health even more accessible to everyone. I could not be more excited for what lies ahead.”

The Result

Working on Fitbit projects, Mercury Development put its expertise in firmware development, hardware integration, app development, and quality assurance to the test numerous times. And each time the end result was a success and a confirmation of the team’s ability to work on nontrivial tasks and unexpected solutions, think out of the box and deliver results.
